I met my wife coming off of one of the most successful relationships of my life. I met a girl from Brazil who was in the States for the summer visiting a friend, and we dated for three months. Knowing that she was going home in August made us both feel safe, like we could have fun and say whatever, because in a few months it would all be over. I never really fell in love because I knew it wasn't going anywhere. When I met my wife in July, it was two weeks until the other girl went back to Brazil, so rather than dump her, I didn't date my future wife until she was gone home. She emailed me the following summer to ask if I wanted to hang out, but by then I was getting married. She sounded surprised and disappointed when I told her, and I've felt guilty for not telling her I met someone else while she was still here, but the relationship was a lot of fun and I don't think either of us were expecting to have a second summer in August.
