Firstly and foremost I love fishing, I am a very keen surfcaster/rock fisher, unfortunately for me i suffer from extreme seasickness so boat fishing is out of the question, I have only ever once managed to get the line out on a boat every other time i have been violently ill, so the option to be able to fish offshore with a torpedo is exciting in opening up possibilities to what i might catch when setting it once in a while.
Reading the central recreational fishing rules (which is my area) It is my understanding and interperatation that the daily bag limit is 20 finfish of which Kahawai is included but there is an additional limit of 10 Snapper.
See a copy below from the website.
Note that (RED Snapper) is included in the bag limit of 20 fin fish not (SNAPPER) there is a difference in these two species
Daily limits per person
In the Central Fishery Management Area there is a combined daily bag limit of 20 finfish, consisting of any combination of:
There is no limit on species not named above.
Additionally, individual limits, over and above the combined bag, apply to:
Snapper: a daily bag limit of 10.
Groper/Hapuku/bass and kingfish: a combined daily bag limit of 5 with no more than 3 kingfish.
Freshwater eels: a daily bag limit of 6.
OK so from this the guys that were taking 20 plus Kahawai were breaking the rules.
I would have thought that if two people were setting the longline then that would double the bag limits for them in theory, otherwise that would mean that if there were say four people on a boat only the boat owners limit would apply because he owns the boat yeah right !!!!!! There bag limit quadruples which is in the rules
I am not condoning greed but if these guys who set the longlines catch was within the specified bag limits then good on them.
8 fish is the most i have ever caught at once on a longline with 2 of us yet I have caught 30 fish surfcasting with 3 of us. Did i feel bad about having a great session, Hell No as its what most surfcasters dream about and goodness knows there have been the quiet sorties with nothing to bring home. Did all my family and friends get a good feed from that great day, sure did.
Also note that on top of your 20 finfish and 10 snapper you can also catch 5 hapuka or 3 kingfish and 2 hapuka so that in my reconing is potential for 35 fish.
Once again Im not condoning greed just showing the rules and offering my perspective.
