I have spent the past few months hitting the hills and chasing deer around, but now winter is upon us, im starting to get keen again. During spring I damaged my camera and I have only just replaced it, so I look forward to using it shortly.
When winter sets in, the lower half of the north island for lack of better words, is usually terrible fishing.... Unless you enjoy catching red cod and dogfish..
To the north, in areas like east cape, Bay of Plenty, Coromandle and beyond, the fishing is fantastic and possibly the best time to fish these locations as it brings in the bigger fish. Although the fishing may be slow at times, the roads are traffic-less and the beaches seem deserted, this is a great time to be out.
Through summer when the snapper are easy to catch, most fish around the country are in the same boat, 28- 35cm and if you are lucky you may get a couple over the 40 mark. During this time of year though, these school snapper are usually in the 45-60cm range, which is 2kg upto 5kg. So just because it is winter, don't pack away the rods and wait till warm weather. Load up the truck, invite a few mates and head to some of these locations.
Captured in those photos are fishing in places Ocean Beach, with blue cod, Mahia with a winter snapper, quite a few shots of healthy fat snapper from Matata over winter months july and August. Te harpua winter fishing and taputaputa... Just to name a few. As you can see, winter snapper look quite fat and they are not usually the 30cm buggers we catch during the summer months
These fish are more typical of summer fishing, very small and it takes a few to get a good feed. Unlike winter where 3-4 good sized pannies are more than enough.
Im looking to head away a fair amount through July, August to BOP, places like Opotiki, snells road, Te Kaha off the rocks, Cape run away, Omaio and Maraenui...... As well as an older favourite Matata. If any of you guys are looking to get out over the winter time and target some of the fantastic winter fishing thats out there, and you want some info on any of the areas I have mentioned, just sing out, apart from you lewis, your singing is unbearable!!. I know a few of you guys who fish further south of HB must be looking forward to getting out into the action
Take ya camera!!
