Howdy James - ah yes that was the catch of my life that year - it started in Dec 1999, with a 19.5lb kingi then the snapper - 10th Feb first cast got me 25lber,7pm this first was a huge fish but was thin it measured 33inches long. The second was a 22lber caught 5th March. The biggy came on the 28th March, been out since day break 10am in the morning , bright not a cloud in the sky, i looked up and noticed one of my lines slack -thought it was a kahawhai because i could see movement on the water then i saw the red tail, hardly fought- 29.5lber 33.5 inches long, the next was on the 15th April - just passing the 20lb mark, the last two were caught September -both 22lbers. Caught all snapper on the Haumoana side of the pipe and 2 of the 6 were caught high tide evening the other 4 oddly were caught mid morning and roughly 3.5 hours before high tide. All were caught on a floating pillie bait - running rig and caught in close and i mean close - 30m or less. I was teaching my wife to fish that year, she made a miss cast at her feet which landed her a 13lb snapper. Fish East Clive with 2 rods and always put one line in close - really close. And never get to comfortable with one spot - unless its producing for ya!
