Ultima Red Ice Line Archived Message

I fished with 30lb Red Ice (0.50mm) last night. I wanted a line that would show up at night to easily check the direction of my cast, help detect slack line bites, better locate a hooked fish in the surf, avoid walking all over my line when baiting up at night etc.

Well Red Ice certainly shows up in the headlamp!
It sort of glows with a light on it. Quite different from Berkley IronSilk, for instance, which is bright orange but doesn't really register under a light at night.

I was also using Daiwa Tournament (yellow) last night, for those that know it. It was admittedly 18lb and thinner at 0.40mm but it just didn't show up like the Red Ice.

When I spooled up with Red Ice yesterday morning it came off the bulk spool in the usual spirals and out of curiosity I grabbed a length in both hands and gave it a bit of a pull - it straightened right out and stayed that way. So it doesn't have much of a memory.

It has the look and feel of a copolymer rather than a nylon line (but Ultima say it is a nylon line) and in that regard it reminds me a lot of the 20lb Berkley IronSilk that I also use when I want extra distance. I was using a fixed spool long cast reel and the Red Ice slithered off a treat. I'll give it a go over grass shortly to confirm it.

In the UK forums it appears to be well regarded and that's how I became aware of it. Most anglers and tournament casters in the UK use multiplier reels and they rate it for cast-ability as well as fishing. As I say it appeared to be doing the business for me on the fixed spool.

I've tried a lot of different line over the years and discovered an awful lot of rubbish! but on first use I was most impressed.
