I suspect they are common because more desirable species has been over fished, and they consumed the spare food allowing them to expand in numbers.
The same might even be true for Barracouta, when the KY numbers were decimated, it left a large opening in the ecosystem and the coutas were best suited to fill the niche.
This is just my theory, and I can not really prove any of them.
