I have found this website to be pretty useful & accurate, Does anyone else use it?? Tides4Fishing I used to be Fisho Matto, But had to re-register and it wouldn't let me use the same board name as before,

I've used it but its predictions of good or bad fishing have never been right for me Its all very well for a website to predict bite times for any particular area. But in doing so it has made the assumption there are actually some fish there to do the biting. A prediction of a very good bite time at spot x is of no use if there are no fish in the area at that time. What we need is a website that tells us where the fish will be. I use it in conjunction with swellmap and metservice as a guide. The thing I've found most useful about that site is the tide differential.

I think its more aimed at boaties - does the supposed "bite-time" vary inshore/offshore? I see most often they predict feeding just after low tide, whereas conventional surfcasting wisdom says the top half of the tide is most productive? http://www.paniasurfcasting.org http://www.surfcaster.co.nz

Its been the most common recommendation I've read, on this message board and in other places. Two hours prior to high tide to two hours after seems to be a common thread. I tend to go fishing when I can, regardless of tide. If it coincides with favourable phases of the tide then all the better. I can't personally confirm better catches on any particular tide phase though. http://www.paniasurfcasting.org http://www.surfcaster.co.nz

Personally, I've had better success at low tide on many surf beaches. My belief is I can reach better areas that still contain a reasonable amount of water, that aren't necessarily as accessible at high tide. Having said that, I've had success at different times of the day and different tides on the same beach. Recently I've been monitoring that idea more and have found dawn and dusk fish better at low tide, night time doesn't seem to matter and during the day I have better success at high tide, or just after on the outgoing. All of this has been from the shore.

I believe there is a slight difference between beach and boat. Some spots work better over the low others over the high. My calendar predicted this arvo and tonight as good fishing, one report in and it was good, as for most other reports today was a bad. All my data is solely based on land based fishing. next good time is sunday morning

I've not heard of a difference between inshore & offshore bite times, but would be interesting to see just what it is, As for surfcasting times, I've always had better luck on the last half of the outgoing, In saying that though, I have also had luck right on high tide, or just as it is beginning to turn, And also when the Tidal Coefficient is high, (meaning higher current)

I just want to know exactly who it is that is telling the fish what the time is. I see the bite times and immediately worry that there are fish that are unaware that they need to be biting at that time.

think the good tides are at different times for different beaches,just depends on what the banks are doing.when i lived in the b.o.p i thought it had to be around high.now at the naki i think the majority of beaches are better over low.

Well I finally got it to work on here, here are some bite time for ya The boxes highlighted in blue are times of the day that the fishing should be Good to Very Good as there are many different calendars that give you the exact time use these to narrow it down. The boxes in Green are days when bigger snapper should be available, as for Kingys I have added it but it is yet to show a good pattern. Example on the 4/6/12 fishing should have been VG in the arvo with big snaps to 15lb caught that day and the possibility of a King. I also think I needs a little more work before the West coast runs true, I am currently trying to split out the west coast data to analise but don't have a lot of it.

MadKeenMatty. I always thought tidal coefficient means the movement between tides. As in the difference between how far the tide goes out and how far it comes in. For example if on a spring tide during full or new moon the high tide is very high, and the low tide is very low, it might have a tidal coefficient of 118. During last or first quarter the tidal coefficient might be as low as 48. This means it will be a very low tide and a very high tide during that particular spring tide, and very little difference between high and low during that last or first quarter tide. For the most part it may not actually have a lot to do with currents, but more to do with a rapid rise and drop at the top end of a high tidal coefficient. At least that's how I understand it. Its a useful tool when deciding whether or not to go to that one spot that is easily accessible at a low tide, but dodgy during a very tide.

Jase, You are right, the tidal coefficient is the difference between the height of the tides, The higher the tides, the higher the tidal coefficient, and the higher the tidal coefficient, the faster the current is running, because of the higher volume of water moving through in the same time span as smaller tides, I may be wrong, but that's how I understand it anyway, :D

It was interesting that while I was living in Taupo, Max Gibbs from our fishing club gathered data from two of us who were fishing all the time. I think that info on our catches was collected over two years.(time date of catch etc) When he put all the info (over 400 fish caught)in the computer, (probably steam driven at that time), it told us that 80% of that catches were made during predictable times following the solunar tables. We of course fished with no idea of predicatable times. I am convinced!

After spending some exhaustive hours performing metaphysical, astronomical and hydrological calculations based around the moon phase, sun rise, barometric pressures and tidal movements, I predict there will be a red cod caught in Hawkes Bay in the next week. Get into em girls and boys . You know you want one.
