Hi all, I need help lol I have a mate heading over from aussie on saturday and hes here for a week and he hasnt seen much off the sea while over there and is another mad keen fishermen, now fishing around here will more then likely be mud around wangaz and santoft. Havent really fished around wellys nor know how the wind effects the sea, so how does the SE effect the fishing and how shitty does the water get from it. Any sugguestions on where to go or even if its worth bothering to go down. thanks in advance

What's the rain been like in the ranges? Make some calls to locals and assess the area. Southeast can be ok if its not too bad. The actual swell size and direction would be more an issue, and water quality. Wellington has lots of inshore beaches that are semi sheltered. The problem is catching much from shore during this time of year. My pick would be Makara or Pukerua Bay heading south. Berley the crap out of the place. You might be surprised. With the amount of rain the Manawatu and Rangitikei has had I'd stay away from the rivers, but they all disperse south. Wanganui currents head south too, and it roughs up bad. West would be your best bet if the swell allows and the SE is too big. Santoft could produce. I know that beach very well having fished it for 30 years. If its fishable your best bet is off Fusilier Rd. Watch out for local whitebaiters on the small streams along the beach. If they are fishable they'll be on them.

Had thought of makara and around that part as well but heard makara isnt the greatest beach to fish. Have thought about fishermans table and te horo aswell, I hate it when the weather mud makes me have to think more than what im capable of

Walk around past the beach to the left. There are several rocky points to try. It produces great trevally and kahawai as well as the usual red cod. I've also seen kingis and snapper caught there. If its a really calm day walk out right out to the seaward side of the point on the left, and even head further south towards Ohau bay. If you want to catch fish in Wellington you need to put some effort in. Its a very small area and a lot of people are competing for that space. In saying that parking your butt on Miramar wharf has produced more than one exceptional days fishing. Other options are Kau and Mahanga Bays, or anywhere from Oriental Bay's southern point onto Evans Bay Pde. Warehou are common this time of year too. Usually a mid water fish you could try float fishing with small strip baits and a variable line length. Try tying a small piece of wool onto your main line and wind it onto your reel, set at whatever depth you want to fish. Attach a float that allows a running line through it and put a small 1/4oz or 1/2oz sinker above your hook to keep it down. Experiment. Get out there and try some spots.

The extended forecast shows Norwesterlies through until Wednesday and a building easterly swell to 3m, dropping at the weekend. If that stays true the east might be worth a look after Tuesday.

solid advice!! cheers for that I havent been out for a fish since march and hanging out to get out again but this weather is really putting a damper on it!!

I know the feeling. I've had the flu for 8 days and missed way too much fishing during that time. Ugh!

it will be interested in seing what the weather does after the weekend after looking at the weather is for monday, my orginal plan was white rock so thats not totally out anymore

Few fish around, the water is a mess at the mo so give it a couple of days to clear and should be OK again. Some of the guys between here and Wellington maybe able to give a bit of an update.

begininng of next week, just waiting to see what the weather does over the next few days and see how the long range weather forecast looks around saturday, but any day between monday thru to wed if that makes any sense to you lol
