Those emergency generates were only fired up to check them and to service them! I only remember them being fired up on a half dozen occasions. When we put into port the AER generators were kept online till the electrical shore line was in place, and the electrical board had the full charge from the shore, did the generators get shut down! Quite a process if I remember right! Like the reduction gears, we had to rotate the generator shaft until it was cool enough to stop! We had 2 generators that we switched back and forth to share the duty of supplying electricity to the ship! Switching them was also a fierce process!
When you came down the ladder, and went to the right, and then an immediate right, went to the bulkhead, my bunk was the top bunk on your left, (top) John Freeborn's bunk was on the bottom!
