WOW! Who says MM's have senility. Your right on target. I had the top rack across from you. Freeborn was a riot! Always kidding around
but had a sharp mind. Up the FER, we had Bill Roth (1st class then but made chief), Chief Mayo, who always went on liberty
with a guy name Leonard, a guy who lived in the same town as Chief Mayo, and who I shared the Throttles with. And a character named
Bill or William Berry, who we always used to play tricks on; built like a fireplug, strong as an ox (probably could arm-wrestle) anyone on
board and win, but he seemed like 1 happy meal short of a full course. A black guy who I cannot remember his name, but liked to sing.
His favorite was "Upon the Roof".Engineering Officer was a Lt. JG Keas (pronounced Keys). My favorite places to 'sack out' were behind
the electrical switchboard on the rubber mats and on the lower level sitting on the sea-water inlet pipe and enjoying the 'cool water'.
I've only made 1 reunion and even though no one attended during 'my time on board', it was great to share some sea-stories with.
Never forget finishing AA-school and getting a cab ride to Philly to sign-on with the Great Ship Norris. After he stopped and pointed
to "over there", all I saw was some scaffolding sticking out from this big hole. After telling my folks, girlfriend, etc., that I had been assigned
to this shiny gray speed demon, my anticipation cratered in a heap at the jagged mass of twisted cables and sheetmetal. Like you, I asked myself
am I supposed to sleep and work on this?
