Hello: I served on the USS Laws DD 558 , out of treasure island, when we were designated a reserve ship. We would take the weekend warriors out to sea and let them get a taste of the real navy. I loved being on the fantail when we were crusing along at 28 knots , dropping depth charges and firing hedge hogs. Sometimes the charges would go off in a school of fish and we would see a spray of silvery little fish.
I learned real fast not to stand at the end of the urinal, unless I wanted to get splashed. WHEW. After 1 time , you learn fast.
Another time a rouge wave washed over the bow and washed me back toward the first bulkhead. I was washed out and through the lifelines, if not for the ratlines, I would have been fish food. After being on the Laws , I served on two different LST's . LST 1083 and LST 1165, what a world of difference.
