Oh, and saying that the company signed the contract so its their fault is simply not true. Do you know what happens when a strike occurs at Ford? They lose MILLIONS of dollars an hour when the line is not going. MILLIONS AN HOUR. They have no choice but to simply cave to unions insane demands and downsize later to compensate. What choice do they have? NONE! Thats the problem. Same with the beer store. What do you think would happen if the union striked for a few months? Molson, Labatts and Sleemans would lose millions. Labatts and sleemans might even have to file for bankrupcy. So instead of doing this, the company caves again to union demands. Thats why there are people earning $60000 a year to sit on a stacker or work in a retail store. Anyway, I don't completely disagree with you guys on all points. Its a fact no management is perfect. Neither are unions. All i'm suggesting is that there NEEDS to be a good friendly dialogue between union and management to get a contract that is fair to all, (FT, PT, 200 series or brand new FT). And heres a great plan: Tie it to profitability. That way maybe people will actually work hard, and work together. Want a great example? WESTJET. Their contract is tied directly to corporate success. SO, everyone works together works hard, its a VERY positive place to work, and everyone earns good wages as a result. And thats before the stock purchase plan, which is very generous. So lets have some constructive dialogue: What if there was an opportunity to tie Beer Store success to bonuses for employees? Maybe tie it to a simple formula of sales (make quarterly sales goals for bonuses) and productivity (in logistics, this could be cost per HL, and in retail this could be sales goals by store). Think of this! Everyone would actually start working together and trying to do their best. Taking pride in their work. No more slackers dicking off doing nothing. Talk about feeling more like a team! Then everyone is in it together. And at quarter end, everyone goes home with extra $$$ in their pocket. Your thoughts guys?

Ford is an example of bad management. Certainly. But the blame cannot be put entirely on management even in that extreme case. Their unionized workers get $60-150000 per year to do jobs a high school kid could do with a months training.
(drivers are a different catagory because market forces and training dictate they deserve more).
