Posted by Carl Brewer on 11/10/2004, 2:06 am, in reply to "UBWW vs. UFCW?" The bottom line is that UFCW 12R24, The Beer Store workers single province-wide local, is now the official bargaining agent and has legal bargaining rights --- unless of course the membership ultimately decides otherwise. The Ministry of Labour lists 'UFCW' as the union representing the 5200 employees of The Beer Store (Brewers Retail). The Ministry of Labour classifies our upcoming Collective Bargaining as "major private sector bargaining" and one of the "Key Negotiations in 2004". It seems likely, to me at least, that references to 'UBWW Provincial Board' would be replaced with 'UFCW 12R24' in cleaning up language in the new collective agreement if/when it is negotiated. For comparison the LCBO workers (OLBEU - Ontario Liquor Boards Employees' Union) is an autonomous component of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE). Just to add to the confusion, even the employer uses two names. It operates as "The Beer Store" but it is legally "Brewers Retail Inc." Hope that helps.
