Posted by Tdotemp I would also like to thank you for correcting my inaccurate portrayal of the event. That being said, the issue remains the same with respect to this scenario. In union-management relations it is a basic principle that the union and management exist in a fundamentally antagonistic relationship. In other words, the nature of the relationship between union and management is one of opposing forces. As such, despite their uniting for a common social purpose, what remains is a situation where union and management are engaging in relationships where the interests of the union are being advanced by the business. Although, the union is not directly benefiting from this situation since the proceeds go to charity, the union is allowing management to assist it in achieving its own goals. I cannot emphasize enough that management must not play any sort of a role in union affairs, especially where money is being exchanged. The bottom line is that our union executive and our employers HEAD OF HR are engaging in a friendly relationship, even if it is for a good cause. I know you think Im some kind of a jerk, but if this sort of friendly relationship manages to continue right through to the bargaining table, we have a recipe for concession bargaining. How on earth will our union be able to bargain in our interests when its now in their best interest to maintain a friendly relationship with management??? Just for the sceptics, if the union wants to achieve these sorts of goals such as charity contributions they can include such agreements in the only place they belong
the contract! Other unions do it.

Allow me to start out by saying that I can't agree with you more. I think that the contribution of both The Beer Store and The UFCW towards Leukaemia research really shows outstanding leadership in upholding social values. I am in fact very proud to be a part of an organization (union) that is so committed to supporting cancer research.
