An answer to Micor$oft's vague hints of Linux kernel 'patent violations': use the FreeBSD kernel instead. Besides, there are things available on FreeBSD which aren't available on Linux, like the ZFS file system and NDIS drivers. Additionally, the *BSD development tree is much more tightly controlled than is the Linux tree, and there are even more apps available in the FreeBSD repositories than in the Debian!
