I've tried DesktopBSD in Virtualbox and had no trouble installing it or running it. I used a downloaded .iso file for the install. DesktopBSD, as my notes say, was fairly easy to figure out, and there was an awesome amount of software available. I tried the previous verion of DTBSD, v1.7. I think maybe they've put out a new version since then.
