That's bad! Yes, those things "happen" unfortunately. Not long ago I recommended to a poster that she run checkdisk in XP to resolve a problem. I then did it myself just "to make sure" it would be ok ........and totally screwed up my system. The old adage of "if it aint broke, don't fix it" never proved truer than when I did that. I wound up ditching my OS core completely and replacing it from an image.
Well so ....... you ran desktop BSD in virtual and it ran ok. Any reason why you didn't keep it?
I suppose I might have download TWO duds but that seems kind of strange. Zips and ISO's usually don't fall apart in transit without showing errors IMMEDIATELY when you try to unzip them.
I don't know enough about these "foreign" systems to try any tricks for fixing the snags. I suppose for someone experienced, these might be fixed with just small adjustments of some kind.
