One wouldn't expect that a commercial operation like VMWare would get their repositories wrong like that. Looking in the PCBSD manual under software management, you should find where in the file structure the repositories are listed and how to edit them to both make sure they match the version you have installed and to add new sources for other programs. You'll find the repository system very different from installing software in windows; all the repositories will carry approved and checked packages and you won't have to trust some guy's statement that his stuff is free of malware. Much safer!
I assume the VMWare product will allow you to install from .iso files directly. That might be a better alternative. If all you can use are the pre-packaged things... well, I dunno how practical that will be. Virtualbox has them too but I haven't tried them. I've read where they are sorta nice to play around with or to get a quick idea of a distro but aren't much for real use. Dunno.
