Looks like they're saying really nice things about *buntu 9.04! I'll be downloading the .iso for Kubuntu very shortly now to try in a virtual machine. This reviewer also likes W7, but not Apple Leopard so much.
And the download should go much faster now. Wednesday evening my internet went dead; my ISP said there wasn't anything wrong and refused to check it out, so I called Computer Doc and he called his friend at the ISP. They replaced something at the neighborhood switcher this afternoon and I'm back on the air. Better still: I was getting .5 MB/s DSL but paying for 1 1/2 MB; now, after they changed whatever it was, I'm finally getting a full 1 1/2 MB/s download speeds!!! ^_^ Silver linings really do come in dark clouds!
I would have changed ISPs long ago, but I live out in the boonies and the phone company is the only one who gets to me with DSL, so I was stuck. They won't lease their lines to any competitors. Someday, though, there will be a credible alternative; right now the cellular and satellite ISPs have unrealistic caps on bandwidth, and my cellular service is marginal anyway. Hopefully WiMax will be available here soon or the caps will get more reasonable. But it's amazing how much faster 1 1/2 MB/s is than .5 MB/s!!! I can watch YouTube videos now without downloading them completely first; now they stream!!! I should be able to get a CD now in 2 or 2 1/2 hours rather than 7 or 9 hours like before.
Wheee!
