What's the big deal? By its name, I can tell vmware-install.pl is most likely a pearl script to install vmware. That's what you want, right? So, when you right-click on the file, your OS says "I know how to do that; I'll use 'add-remove' and install it for you". If it doesn't work, THEN you might need to search out some answers.
Me, I have NO IDEA how tarring, etc, works but I've installed many tarred packages. A very few didn't work but nearly all did. It's no biggie.
