That's not much of a laptop. 256 RAM, 56k dialup modem, 30 GB hard drive. 1.3 GHz processor and (apparently) no video RAM is pretty marginal if you want to listen to music or watch movies. Also note that it's not new but refurbished. Shoot for at least 2 GB RAM, some video RAM, 100 GB at least hard drive, plus Wifi and DSL/cable capability. Wifi lets you get rid of the wires :^> and also can be installed pretty cheaply in a desktop.
I disagree that laptops are stop-gap devices. I have a laptop for "production", which I can take with me or use at home. It's not a cheapie laptop, but not TOP of the line either. Good and portable. Then I have a desktop PC which I use for experimenting; it's old, but has been seriously upgraded to where it's also not TOP of the line but pretty good. But I can't take it with me.
So: laptops have the disadvantages of running a little hotter and being a little harder to work on because they are small and more compact - but they are portable!! Pay a decent price for a laptop of decent specifications and it will do you well for many years.
Oh, and I run Linux on both, so I don't worry too much about viruses and such! XP is very old and long in the tooth, and you have to pay for it whereas Linux is free.
MHO!!
