Looks like that LC2520S 17" screen modle could be turned into a very adequate machine!!! My laptop is 17", and I'm really glad I paid a little extra. It's bigger than some, but worth every inch. No squints for me!
$1400 is about what one needs to pay for a really decent laptop. There are cheaper ones, and it really depends on how it is to be used, but it does seem like whenever I go for a cheapie I soon get to feeling cramped and want something better and with more "wiggle room". Or it goes obsolete too quickly and I have to replace it before I get my money's worth.
Desktops also are good buys where one doesn't need portability. They have the advantage of being larger and more spread-out, so that they run cooler and can be worked on more easily. They also tend to use more generic hardware than laptops, and are much easier to upgrade. The same "amount" of computer is usually going to be cheaper in a desktop than in a laptop.
For example, System 76 has some attractive desktops with Linux pre-installed, as does RCubed Tech (where I bought my laptop, and they were good to deal with, and their email support was great!). Remember that many desktops are sold without monitors!
A Google search will show many vendors.

I had a fortune cookie the other day and it said: 'Outlook not so good'. I said: 'Sure, but Microsoft ships it anyway'.
