I found this article which lists a couple of very simple things you yourself can do to help speed up a draggy computer.
One cause of a slow computer is a corrupted Registry. This article explains some about that; the links on the right give more info and lead you to some software registry cleaners. Here is a tutorial on defragging, which cleans out many trash files and compacts the file structure for better hard drive speed. Files on, for example, C drive, can get scattered all over, with many files in the wrong locations; defragging reorganizes the files so the computer can access the hard drive quicker.
Viruses usually make your computer work very hard, which means it can't spend as much time on what YOU want, so it runs more slowly as you accumulate more viruses. Here is a list of anti-virus information articles. The key thing about virus control, as I understand it, is to keep your anti-virus software up to date and to regularly download the new virus detection files for that software (so that the program will be able to recognize new viruses).

My software never has bugs. It just develops random features.
