a bit ... and I worked on a lady's computer with Vista fairly extensively ... and I know what you're talking about. It's annoying as heck.
Yes, there's a way to turn off the protected mode but I can't remember the sequence and I no longer have my test Vista running. I disliked it so much I got rid of it.
Try googling. Type in "turn off protected mode + Vista"
(Mind you, when you turn that off, you'll likely get all the problems which caused your XP system to quit. You MUST take precautions against clicking on stuff that gives you viruses).
