Thumb drives hold an incredible amount of data and text files etc. take hardly any space at all, so a thumb drive can suffice for those. Pictures take more though.
Where I like an actual usb hard drive storage is to save entire operating system images. That is ..... one saves the full Vista or XP operating system, along with all installed programs ..... to the external hard drive, as an "image" file. If/when the operating system goes AWOL, one can then just write back the stored image and take off again in minutes without re-installing the OS and all programs .... which can take weeks. So ...... minutes vs. weeks of time ..... is a huge advantage.
The image files take up a LOT of room and it's always good to have 2 or 3 of them saved, in case one of them is no good. It's pretty easy to use up 100 mb with several images of Vista.
