It should be easier for the manufacturers to open-source their hardware and drivers... and let linux developers hack up their own versions for Linux. Probably could do BETTER than the companies on drivers, with faster fixes and improvements.
Never understood why they wouldn't do that over-all instead of just a few patches.
As to a common format in Linux... each format has its strengths and weaknesses. I find very little difference between .rpm and .deb, for instance, nor in the package managers. But I do like some of the newer package managers that are being developed. And THAT'S the reason I don't favor a single format: It would stifle at least somewhat the innovations which are being made.
And I haven't done it yet, but I understand the Alien package can convert any of the usual formats and many unusual formats back and forth in seconds. So maybe there really isn't that much advantage to a common format???
BTW, I tried openmamba yesterday; it's not supported in Virtualbox yet, and the X server wouldn't work. Now I've downloaded PureOS and am about to give it a try.
