Yes "Alien" can and does convert various package formats, BUT many times the converted package does not work, so it is hit and miss. As for manufacturers open-sourcing their drivers, etc., there really is no incentive for doing so and this point was brought up many times on various Linux forums. Linux is not a high demand operating system, so there is no real incentive or interest on the part of the manufacturers to do so like there is for Windows and Mac OSX.
