Well, I don't know about subscribing to get updates, but I do know that prior to installation, you have to agree to a license agreement which if I recall correctly is a new thing with OpenSuse, and has to do basically with compliance with U.S law about exporting components of OpenSuse to countries banned from doing business with the USA.
OpenSuse 11.1 is quite fast and a pleasure to use! I rank it up there with Debian 5.0.3, Imagicos 2009, and Mandriva 2009, 2009.1, and 2010, and DreamLinux.
