What is a "registry"???
Actually, I remember even though my last Windows was ME. And it was still young when I dumped her for Mandrake 5.something.
However, I can't help thinking that, with all the efforts you undertake to avoid being virussed or botted, it would be simpler for you to switch to Linux and gain better safety for a lot less work. Unless you just PREFER being the guru people like the lady you described can call on for help when they act totally against common sense.
I bet you never did try any of the Linux LiveCDs I told you about, no? Oh well!!!! Maybe someday you'll get up your nerve enough to try something new. :^>
Really, the learning curve isn't bad; I survived and you are much more knowledgeable than me.
