Firewalls

My computer keeps saying I have no firewall and it could be at risk.

I'm not even sure what a firewall is and what it does. I do remember a few years ago hearing that if you had one you could get trapped behind it yourself and not be able to access some things..

Do I need a firewall and if I had one would it cause me problems?
