Windows firewall isn't necessary if you're behind a router and have your wireless secured. If you're out on hotspots with a laptop on wireless, then yeah ..... keep the firewall on. Otherwise, it can be a real pain in the butt.
#5 is a real good suggestion. Problem is program developers writing sloppy code ... but that will likely change soon. What true DEP does, is prevent buffer overruns ....... the MAIN cause of data execution from malware.
#4 is a good idea which I think Linux users employ most of the time? Run as a user and not as Root? Personally, I prefer running as administrator all of the time but then .... no one else accesses my computers either. (Wife has her own).
#3 was nothing but a huge pain in Vista. It popped up for every little stupid thing .... even for viewing system files. I understand they've toned it down and streamlined it some in W-7 and so it might be ok there. I would probably PERSONALLY keep it turned off for myself though.
#6 ? Ehhch ..... I dunno. It sounds good on the surface but if you allow browser apps to run as trusted, you can still easily be bitten by something new. Flash and _ are the major enablers and trying to browse without them is often pretty frustrating too.
The BIGGEST safeguard (for those who aren't too sharp on browsing dangers) is to run browsers in a sandbox. That way, the system simply can NOT get damaged by accidentally triggering a virus.
But you know what the biggest problem is ....
It's the inexperienced who CAN'T get something to work and then simply say ok to everything and even go to extra lengths to GET the danged thing to work. If it's a trojan they're trying to get going, they'll get it going no matter how MANY safeguards exist.
