Posted by the rev but i think this discussion is good nonetheless because it goes to the core of christian beliefs. maybe i could try to frame the issues a little better and the three of us could work through them? 1. all who would call themselves christians must believe in the divinity of christ and the atonement of his blood. yes or no and why or why not. 2. aside from that (if that is an essential belief (i think it is)) what MUST a christian believe. 3. maybe more precise than no. 2 would be what CAN a christian believe and still be within the confines of no. 1? i'll go back to my extreme examples. someone says god told me to murder people with blue eyes. is any christian going to go along with that? no. but why do we hedge on other things, like, for instance, divorce. rev, don't you think that there is authority in the scripture for christians to chastize their brothers in a christlike manner?

i've been out of town for thanksgiving so i'm sorry the thread got a little old.
technical, i think you made some good points, especially about if we were about god's work we might not have time to debate the finer points.
