If you are just thinking of nogi grappling, work alot on takedowns. MMA is not no gi, and if you want to go that direction you must spar with striking. Your guard doesn't seem to be such a great position when you are getting pounded. You learn to attack more and defend better when you are getting beat on. sorry for the wait I have been very busy. There are many differences in the two, but I think they compliment each other. The gi work is more technical, and keeps your mind sharp. The no gi is much faster and athletic, and makes you work tighter and simpler. Doing both will be good for you.
