Westlake Black Chaps versus East Austin Yellow Jackets
7:00 PM November 3, 2007
Hendrickson High School
2905 FM 685
Pflugerville, TX 78660
Actual Results:
• Chaps offense versus Yellow Jackets defense
o Chaps offensive line versus Yellow Jackets defensive line – Even. Chaps OL is big, strong and fundamentally sound. Yellow Jackets defensive line is quick off the ball and disruptive led by #2. EA penetration keeps Chap OL from getting blocks on the second level. Look for some good individual battles, double teams, and games in the trenches.
o Actual – Even. Other than the opening drive, the Chaps weren’t able to sustain a scoring drive.
o Chaps rb’s versus Yellow Jackets lb’s – Edge Yellow Jackets. Chaps were never able to get #38 outside to use his speed in the last game while #22 was the work horse off tackle in the power running game. Jackets pursuit speed at linebacker kept the Chaps contained led by #1.
o Actual - #22 scored again. Other than #4, the Jacket LB’s did not consistently standout.
o Chaps passing game versus Yellow Jackets db’s – Edge Chaps. Chaps hit two 40+ yard plays on the Yellow Jackets on fourth down in the first half of the last game. In the second half the Jackets began getting better pressure, forcing the ball out quickly and ended up with a pick. #81 has speed to score if he can get the ball in space.
o Actual – The Chaps had little success in the passing game actually completing passes. The passes were on the money, but the defense was good and there were a few drops. However, the threat of the pass did back the Yellow Jackets defense off and the created the opportunity for key penalties at the end of the game.
o X factors – QB #2 ability to break contain and get some big runs. Pass protection.
o Actual - The Chaps game plan called for more QB runs than the previous match-up and QB#2 running added another factor the Jackets had to account for. QB#2 was the Bodog Championship Game MVP.
• Yellow Jacket offense versus Chaps defense
o Yellow Jacket offensive line versus Chaps defensive line – Even. Chaps DL is strong while Yellow Jackets OL is quick off the ball and throws multiple blocks. Key Chaps defenders were pancaked on East Austin TD runs.
o Actual – The Yellow Jackets looked flat and it showed up in lackluster blocking in the first half.
o Yellow Jacket rb’s versus Chaps lb’s – Edge Yellow Jackets. Yellow Jackets pounded the ball between the tackles led by a stellar game from #4. It will be interesting to see what adjustments will the Chaps coaches make to try to slow the East Austin power run game, if any.
o Actual – Not many holes for the Jacket’s RB’s and the Chaps did a good job tackling low. In the second half the Jackets started ripping off 8 yard runs. #4 and #28 scored. They just did not have many opportunities.
o Yellow Jacket passing game versus Chaps db’s – Edge Chaps. Chaps ended up with several picks as the EA passing game was not clicking in the last match-up and was no factor.
o Actual – Same as the first game. When teams advance this far, it makes it difficult if they are one dimensional.
o X factors – QB #7 ability to break contain and get some big runs. Accuracy in passing game.
o Actual – Not a factor.
• Special teams
o Conversions – Even. Both teams can convert kicks for two pointers.
o Actual – Jackets conversions were off.
o Kickoff coverage – Edge Yellow Jackets. Yellow Jackets heat seeking missiles strike fear in the heart of returners.
o Actual – WL #38 took the opening kick of the second half to the house, finishing with a sweet move about 35 yards out on a Yellow Jacket defender who was in perfect position to make the tackle, and left him diving at air. In a telling display, the East Austin player laid on the field long after the score.
o Kickoff return – Edge Yellow Jackets. Yellow Jackets returners a threat to score anytime they touch the ball.
o Actual – Chaps kicked on-sides every time. The Jackets were ready and fielded them all. It gave the Jackets good field position, but eliminated any big plays in the return game.
• Intangibles
o Yellow Jackets won the first match-up 34-8
o The Yellow Jackets won this match-up in last years’ D1 JPW Championship with the same core players on both teams.
o Chaps coaches have won the D1 PW Championship game the last two years.
o Yellow Jackets have too much speed and athleticism for the Chaps. The Chaps typically don’t like to change what they do and depend on good execution. It would appear that it will take a creative game plan and significant scheme adjustments for the Chaps to have a chance to win. Yellow Jackets coaches have shown the ability to make the right in-game adjustments. It will be interesting to see both of these coaching staffs work their magic.
o Edge – Yellow Jackets
o Actual – The Yellow Jackets seemed to take the rematch for granted and came out uninspired while the Chaps pulled out all the stops and played with high emotion for the entire game. The Chaps very effective game plan called for keeping the ball away from the Jackets and limiting their opportunities. In the second half, the Jackets had seemingly regained their magic mojo and appeared on their way to taking over the game when they immediately fumbled the ball, costing them a valuable possession and giving momentum right back to the Chaps. The referees made several critical calls in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter. They have to call it the way they see it. However, one pass interference penalty when the Jackets had stopped the Chaps on fourth down with four minutes reamining was a blown call and the referees will be embarrassed when or if they see it on tape, especially given the game situation. But good teams, much less great ones, should never ever put themselves in the position to be at the mercy of a bad call. Just an outstanding coaching job by the Chaps to have their team in position to take advantage.
• Chaps come out determined and hitting, but East Austin is just too much in the end. 37-16 Yellow Jackets.
o Actual – 16-12 for the Centex 2007 Champion Black Chaps. With San Antonio having a weaker year and the game being played in Cedar Park, the Chaps have a real chance to advance to the State Championship game for the first time ever provided they put the same effort and intensity into the game on the 17th.
