Posted by Jon - NJ 7b/8a this winter on July 8, 2008, 17:33:50, in reply to "Fishers invading New Jersey?"
I've seen them a few times the past several years... first, crossing the street (!) in a suburban neighborhood, what originally was to me a "mystery animal" that looked like a Wolverine (a relative); a stocky, large, low-slung weasel-like predator with short legs and an aggressive gait - but somewhat smaller than the former, and reddish-brown. And I knew there are no Wolverines in NJ! I was confounded, and thoughts came to mind of some new cryptozoological phenomenon!
I saw this animal again crossing the street at the same place a year later; creature of habit, I guess! There is a public park with a wooded area, stream and pond nearby which, in retrospect now knowing what this animal is, would explain its presence.
Then in Watchung Reservation (Union Co.) last year I twice saw my "mystery animal" patrolling the perimeter fence of the Demo Gardens - the second time I had a witness who identified it as a Fisher, and commented that there had been a recent news item concerning their reappearance in NJ. I told him about my earlier sightings and the air of mystery surrounding them... finally solved!
