It is about time, LBI is 6 miles out at sea off the Southern N.J. coast you may not think that is not
much but with winter lows averaging at least 10 degrees warmer than the mainland of N.J.at our family`s house (father in law) in Beach Haven Park the annuals stay in bloom sometimes well in to December ,many winters just before Christmas week.L.B.I., Lower Cape May Pennisula, and all of Coastal Delmarva are Palm Tree Friendly Zone 8 territory too ,not just for Needle ,and Dwarf Palmetto`s but True trunked Palms, Example here in our inland location in Heislerville Cumberland County, N.J.Med-Fan Palm and Trachycarpus fourtunei are perrenials (dieing back to mulch levels, and recover ever year)but my 8foot tall Trachy is almost totally winter hardy on the south side of my house.
The Atlantic Gulf Stream plays a big factor now more than ever with global temps slowly inching up .Site location will play a good deal in Palm trees survivability,A warm spot south facing away from winter winds if possibly will benefit thinks like Palmettos, Trachy`s and Washingtonias (may loose all leaves over winter ) but in a high dry spot will most times bouce back when warm weather has returned.
