I have transplanted spanish moss for years. It does fine in Southern VA/Richmond. It seems to prefer pines or evergreens (I think maybe direct sun and direct wind dries it out). Also, it is best to put it near water. The main problem with it is birds and squirrels take it. I have some from NC (Nags Head), VA and FL. It all survived the winter. The NC and FL actually did the best. It is hard to get Virginia spanish moss because there are only a few places that I know of to find it (First landing state park, wash woods cemetary at false cape state park and supposedly at the Dismal Swamp on Lake Drummond). Does anybody know anywhere else in Virginia to find populations of it? One other thing, if you live in the city in a high traffic area, it will be hard to keep the plant alive. Good air quality is required (it is, after all, an air plant). If you live outside of zone 7a I doubt you will be able to keep it alive outside. I know when I was at VA Tech in Blacksburg, VA (6b) the spanish moss did not make it through the lower humidity and 0 degree F temps.
