Jim,
I didn't know what the exact number was for fig damage - I'd heard anything between 5'F and 15'F. But 9'F seems very reasonable and would certainly explain why my fruiting has not been very consistent!
Not having the greatest fig micro-climate in my new house's backyard, I plan to try "Chicago Hardy" in the ground this year. I don't think it's branches are really any hardier than others - the original plant came from Sicily, after all - but reports say it is supposed to have a better than everage ability to bounce-back fast from damage and fruit well on new growth. The amount of early versus late crop is something that varies between fig varieties - so I wanted a fig with a larger late crop since the early crop may get eliminated if the plant freezes back (my goal was a fig I wouldn't have to protect much but one I would still get fruit from). If you protect them really well or grow them far south enough, the timing of the major fruiting is less of an issue.
I also have a potted Lattarula (Italian Honey) Fig - a personal favorite that produces figs that are light green or yellow when ripe - but I believe they have a large early crop so that one will stay potted for now and spend winters in the garage.
