Hi Mike, I am in SE Morris Co. and am not far from you. Though Edison is barely any more than 30 min. from me, let me tell you you are in a GREAT SPOT! Your low winter temp's. will be 7-8 deg. warmer than even where I'm at. I know, I have a friend in Woodbridge (practically the same town, right?) and I have specific temp. figures for some areas around me. You're practically the same zone as NYC. It's good Ron showed you the Zone map. While it's a reliable source, the Arbor Day Foundation map has you in Zone 7a however. It puts me on extreme edge of 6b, if not 7a. And there's a new map coming out (from Ron's I'm sure) that will likely have some (warmer)changes. I've figured that diagonal line around our area is delineated by the 2 Watchung Mt's. One side you're in 6b, the other side 7a. They're not huge but they make a difference in air flow, retention,...etc.
Also where you are, lower elevation, closer to water (bay), to the south of even NY, close proximity to more urban areas, are a few reasons your area is so much warmer. Temp's. are significantly warmer starting in the Rt.22 area of Union/Springfield. From there, any points east or south are warmer and shoud be Zone 7a. (I bet new map will have these towns and area Zone 7a).
You will have many possibities, though most cold-hardy will still give you most success, but experimenting could yield good results. Also better chances w/ Yuccas, Elephant Ears, Bananas,..etc....Keep in touch, we should probably talk more, and I can tell you more of what I've been able to grow so far...(If it grows for me, it will grow for you, maybe faster!)
