Hi again Mike. What you were saying about microclimates is important. Do you have any protected areas you could plant, esp. south or east side of house, or along some wall/fence, or a shed/garage? Not sure how much you might be willing to protect, but if protected enough could really be planted anywhere. The main culprit is the wind - though it may not kill it, it could look kinda beat up by winter's end and take a little while to recover.
But if not too windy, a hardier Windmill like Joe has may be alright or sustain only partial/minor damage, but could still be protected to be really safe. They get even hardier with age.
Needle Palms,IMO(for our area) unless quite mature and est. could suffer the most from wind, though they're the most cold-hardy. But as long as it's in a protected spot however, or otherwise given protection from wind, it would with almost certainy sail thru just fine.
And Sabal Minor is tough too and a good foundation plant. A more northern, hardier type which Joe also likely has should be more bulletproof, and maybe could be planted more exposed too if not too windy (or if covered during extreme winter).
I have a "Bulgaria" form Windmill growing - leaves sort of beat up after harsh winter(it is in EXPOSED site), but is growing new healthy green leaves already. Also Sabal "Birmingham" (hybrid) and Windmill form (Trachy Wagnerianus) growing along ESE wall and doing very well with very little protection... Winter low at my house...-2 deg.! And this was their first winter planted out.
Maybe you already checked out Joe's plant list - sounds like he might be getting more things in too shortly. Certainly the (3) main ones that people mentioned, Joe I'm sure has, if there's something else different you could always check back with us. And actually in a couple of months I should be taking a trip south (mid-south) and will be picking up a few plants/palms, so if there was still something unavailable, like Sabal Birmingham or T. wagnerianus or such just let me know if you'd like. Perhaps 5 or 7 gallon size too, which otherwise would be costly to ship from somewhere.
Also have growing here Sabal Minor, Yucca Rostrata (3ft.), Y. Recurvifolia, Joshua Tree (tree-like yucca), and Spanish Moss. Others in pots ready to be planted inc. Needle Palm, Texas Sabal, Wash. Filifera, + other varieties of Windmills, Sabals, also hardy Bananas, Elephant Ears, Ginger, agaves , and cacti. (Lot of work ahead of me - LOL). Sorry for long post. Take Care, Terry
