Hi, My Allium Globes foliage are browning on the tips and the long slender leaves appear to be very weak, bending very much... is this normal and if not, what do you think happened?
The tips of the leaves browning and getting weak is not abnormal, especially if the flower has already bloomed. If the flowers have already bloomed and this is happened it is perfectly normal the bulb is simply drawing the nutrient from the leaves back in to the bulb for next year. However if the blooms have not get occurred and the browning has holes with it also it maybe an insect in which case an insecticidal soap (or other chemical controls) should remedy the problem. I hope this helped and good luck.
erk is right, the leaves feed the bulb. give it some compost or food now and teh leaves will use it to further manufacture good. do not cut the foliage off until it yellows and dries. garden will do this whent he bulbs are ready to pick/ L
Of the 10 I planted 6 have stalks with a flower (almost anyway) - the remaining 4 look very weak and have no stalks with flowers. I am going to investigate further by pulling the non blooms out later... I suspect there may have been bulb rot.
Well I'm very glad to hear that a least some of the plants are blooming for you. If this is your first year for these plants, don't be put off because some didn't bloom. Sometimes alliums have to go thru one year before they put up flowers. With that said investigating for bulb rot isn't a bad idea, but let the leaves die back before you do that. Also what lk said about fertilizing now would be an outstanding idea. BTW, you should post a pic when the plants bloom.
FYI- Several tulip bulbs that I removed from the same bed are very rotted. I don't know why this is - the area doesn't seem very damp at all. Perhaps during the winter the area became wetter than normal. I'll continue to investigate.
