We planted two healthy dwarf crape myrtles this past fall. As winter approached, the leaves fell off. We assumed this was because of the winter (were we right, should this have happened?). When we bought the plants we were told that they bloom in the late summer. We thought that meant the flowers, not the leaves. When should the leaves start to grow again? As of this past weekend there were no signs of any leaves growing. What should we do? Is this normal or are the plants dead?
Crape Myrtle is one of the very last plants to leaf out and they also can be damaged by cold winters. If fall planted there is a chance that it may have died back or died outright, but most likely it will still leaf out or at worst sprout from the base but they grow relatively quickly once they start growing and should not be totally dead although it is possible since we did get very cold this year.

Emily,
If you are in the Philadelphia area like many of us on this board, most of us don't see any leaves popping out on our crape myrtles until around May 1. So be patient!
Also, this was a bad winter - so if your crape myrtles only sprout from the bottom, you can cut off the tops and let them re-grow from the bottom. But wait until June or July before you cut anything off. They sometimes have tremendous powers of regeneration from what appears to be dead branches!
