Its not a black racer, and it could just be a black rat snake but I thought it was a little thin and kinda aggressive almost like a northern water snake.
I didn't try to pick it up but was just looking at it getting too close and it got aggressive (defensive) and coiled like he was going to strike.
Joe, I think it is a black rat snake. Probably nasty because it is very hungry, very thin, and mean. There are a million baby bunnies around now, so there wqill soon be a lump in the snake's belly.
Thats what threw me off is that its so long and thin. Usually a black rat snake would be much fatter at that length. Maybe its just young or hungry or both.
They are wonderful snakes. for more than 20 years the ( back in the day when ted and I were volunteer ENT's on the Franklin Ambulance squad) the local police would call us to go remove snakes when someone called and wanted the police to kill the snake. Our boys and or ted would go out and would bring the snakes back here. many are still around and quite large now. Never worry if they are in teh basement, they eat rodents and will go out the way they came in. we recently found a snake skin under my computer table in my 'office or writing room' . This room use to be garage so they are probably ways they can get in, I know mice get in and I HATE rodents. I love snakes. L
