- protecting Hardy Tropicals over Winter?

on November 1, 2009, 17:09:49Both plants are now 4 years old in my garden. Past winters I have constructed tents around them and filled in with 2 feet of dry leaves.
I am wondering if they are now well established enough to move on to a less cumbersome protection?
The Trachycarpus is 4 feet tall, 6 feet wide and has a 20-inch tall trunk:
The Dunstan grapefruit is 9 feet tall and 5 feet wide. Should I do a bit of pruning before wintering?

Do you live in Cape May Susan? I don't know alot about protecting palms since I opted for the needle palm in which case I simply threw it out in front of my house and basically just left it alone 5 years ago and its thrived through 3f lows... so all i can say is maybe prune some of the leaves and wrap them??? and maybe just try to protect it from those winter winds that will make it seem colder than what it is...
Heck if I were you id just let it ride this winter out and let it prove its hardy palm name like you said it is established by now but I dont know if thats a gamble your willing to take since you could possibly lose 4 years of growth. GL - Re: protecting Hardy Tropicals over Winter?

Looking good Susan I would mulch the ground and use leaves as much as you feel like it. I did not mulch or protect my grapefruit at all and it defoliates but does fine. Now we might have additional heat in summer that makes it stronger but yours looks pretty strong! Thanks for posting a photo of that I was curious. Mine looks really good and I've been very impressed with its hardiness.

Posting Photos
In order to post photos, you must first upload the photos onto the internet. You need to either have your own web space to do this, or get a free subscription to Photobucket.com or Webshots.com or a photo service like that, or Wunderground.com weather site, and now Google.com has this also through gmail accounts. So upload the photo to the internet, then go to it and right or left click on it (ctrl + click on a Mac) to open it in a new window. Copy the address of where the photo is located on the internet, and paste it into the "Optional Image URL" box on your post before you post it. You may use the "preview" key to see if the photo is loaded and the address copied correctly. You can post multiple messages by typing img src="photoaddresshere" you must surround this by "<" and ">" Post any questions on how to put photos up on the forum and we will help you.
