I agree with tom and peter on this issue. I have always believed in treating my staff more like friends than an employee and find i get respect back in return,dont get me wrong if they "step out of line" they know about it. I agree with peter that if staff are on with something that required 100% attention at that moment i.e timing belts,brakes etc then i make it clear "no phones" other than that a few txts a day etc i let go. we all know how damned hard good staff are to get now adays (and i am looking for another mechanic now that i cant find!) so while ever my staff work hard and make me money i try to run it as a relaxed workplace other than an army camp. You get out what you put in..... i find that with my staff. sean. p.s...... anyone want a job?? leeds area.
