Gareth Edwards of Vauxhall dealers Cawdor Cars in Aberystwyth, was announced as the winner of the prestigious ‘Top Technician 2012’ competition on Friday, May 18th.
The awards presentation took place as the culmination of the inaugural ‘Top Technician Live’ symposium at the Mercedes-Benz World conference facility in Brooklands, Surrey, where Gareth, the ‘quiet man’ of this year’s contest, received his imposing trophy from the out-going ‘Top Technician’ champion, John Tinham. "I'm so proud. Winning this award is a real achievement for me – I never thought I'd make it this far", said a delighted Gareth.
Dan Wright, of Clive Atthowe Tuning, Norwich, was announced as the runner-up in the intensely fought competition, which saw over 600 workshop technicians from around the country vying for the coveted title and the ‘Top Technician’ winner’s prize haul worth over £15,000 including a tax-free cash award of £2,500.
Commenting on what is undoubtedly the ultimate scrutiny of a technician’s professional skills, ‘Top Technician 2012’ chief examiner Ian Gillgrass of the Institute of the Motor Industry, (IMI) – the competition’s on-going technical partner - said:
“Gareth’s achievement is outstanding. The pace of advancement in vehicle systems is relentless, so every year the examiners have to make the tests more searching and intensive. Gareth’s performance through every phase of the competition was of the highest order – right out of the top drawer of his toolbox. All technicians have to constantly raise their game to stay abreast of the technology, and Gareth thoroughly merits his place amongst the elite ranks of past Top Technician winners.”
The Top Technician competition is organised by the leading trade journal, ‘Aftermarket’, and is open to workshop technicians from all sectors of the UK vehicle servicing industry.
“It has been a few years since the competition has been won by a technician from the franchised dealer end of the industry,” said ‘Aftermarket’ managing editor and Top Technician project manager Nicola St Clair, “so I’m sure the independent or fast-fit boys will be honing their skills to win it back when the 2013 competition opens with the first round online test paper in September this year. Meanwhile, we and all the generous ‘Top Technician’ sponsors want to congratulate Gareth on his wonderful success.”
