I have been told in the past that Toluene based engine flushes can be harmful because of the way they attack the residues in the engine. The way it was explained to me (admittedly by a flush manufacturers rep but it did seem to make sense) was to watch the way it worked as you pour it in through the filler neck. Toluene (solvent) based cleaners wash the residue immediately and dry the surfaces of oil and also cause the removed residue to be held in suspension in larger lumps which in extreme cases could block the oil pick up pipe, one of the reasons some people will never use a flush of any kind because of bad experiences in the past. Detergent based cleaners gradually break down the residue which may take a little while longer to work but is far better for the engine as it does not wash away the lubricant and cleans the engine effectively. In my own car I always use a detergent based flush of which there are many brands availabe. HTH Shaun
