You've hit the nail on the head there Peter, the government has wanted licencing for garages for years, but admit that neither Trading Standard or VoSA have the money or staff to police any such scheme. At least the Carwise scheme was a chance that there could be some sort of voluntary code that would help to drag the garage trade's image up, with that gone, there are only local or national 'opt in' schemes, such as the RMI, UKGA etc to try to improve the image.
Interesting question though about whether the next move for the OFT is to bring in compulsory licencing for garages, if they are not prepared to consider the RMI's ideas.
