Re: BP SERVICE CENTRES
Posted by Peter Wright on June 21, 2006, 8:45 am, in reply to "BP SERVICE CENTRES" Lets say its 4 techs and 30 minutes per service. The customer MUST GET CHARGED 2 hrs labour to cover the costs. So the labour costs for four techs for 30 minutes works out as the same cost for 1 tech. at 2 hours. Its all about advertising.

Posted by Dave Hill on June 22, 2006, 10:14 pm, in reply to "Re: BP SERVICE CENTRES" "You get what you pay for..." "Quality not quantity...." "More haste less speed..." "Buy cheap, buy twice..." Blahdy blah! I am disappointed that BP would put their name to a cheap marketing gimmick like this. I use BP for my oil supplies & I take comfort from the fact that they are on top of their game when it comes to oil. I feel that they are cheapening their name in doing this type of thing. We all know how hard it is to attract the right quality of staff. I don't think that any quality guys are going to percolate down to this level of servicing & if they do they will be ridiculed for "having idea's above their station". How are these outlets going to deal with a motor with leaking rear cylinders & soaked shoes. & When the cylinder is replaced, the brake pipe shears, as the union is undone. If it’s a Peugeot there will be a choice of four cylinders Etc etc... You know how it goes. Thirty minute service my ar5e!!! I suppose this is were they make the killing. The basic service is £99.95 & after all the extra work is done you are faced with a £500 bill. This week I have had my eyes opened to the workings of a local Vauxhall dealer. They quoted a guy for a service on his 02 plate Omega 2.2 (42,000) miles. He takes it in asks for a MOT at the same time. They call him mid morning & explain that they had mistakenly quoted for a small service when a Major Service is required. The rear dampers needed changing & the front pads were worn. He rang me (fed up) for a quote. Now I am no Vauxhall expert, but I am sure that these are due a full service & timing belt at this mileage. I asked him to call the dealer to ask about his belt. They said “Oh yes it does appear that you need a new timing belt”(no mention until prompted). He paid for his oil change & MOT (£99.98) & booked it in with me for all the work that needs doing. The rear dampers are damp & not knackered by any means. My point in this extended post is…. If a dealer can’t decipher the needs of a particular vehicle of their own make, then how are these Xpress outfits going to perform? The customer message remains the same.. Find a workshop that you trust & stick with it. Regards Dave Hill

Posted by Steve H on June 25, 2006, 9:01 am, in reply to "Re: BP SERVICE CENTRES" If they put four guys on the car for thirty minutes then they probably can complete a service on it - two man-hours is plenty to service most cars. So the customer gets it done while they wait for a fixed price in a modern efficient looking environment - why does anyone think that this won't take off?? And btw, Kwik-Fit are doing cambelts as well as servicing.

Re: BP SERVICE CENTRES
Posted by Dave Hill on June 26, 2006, 12:00 am, in reply to "Re: BP SERVICE CENTRES" Trust me mate I am not looking from a technician’s point of view. Yes they will be able to do a Service in the time allocated. This will appeal to a certain type of customer that enjoys the "drive through" mentality that we are becoming accustomed to. I firmly believe that the type of customers that we "WANT" are the type that appreciate the personal approach that can be experienced at the type of place I run. Yes the BP idea will probably work but it will probably generate even more business for many independents by way of it shortcomings. The tyres that I don't sell as a result of the fast fits, I am not concerned with, as I have enough on my plate with regulars who don't want to pay over the odds for the services of a glossy multi million pound, high street set-up. Re: BP SERVICE CENTRES
Posted by Peter Wright on June 26, 2006, 8:35 am, in reply to "Re: BP SERVICE CENTRES" Over here that equates to "less than" AUST$240 Given that oil and filter would cost the business approx. $20 (depends on level of use as judged by the suppliers) that brings the labour cost to $220. At a current labour rate for technicans at $60 to $80 per hour (OZ) that equates to 3.66 to 2.75 hours. Now if I use a "Service mechanic" - yep we have that qualification over here (lower pay) - then that may equate to 4.4 hours to 4 hours. If I may ask - What other components/items/lubricants/checks etc. are included in the "less than 100 quid" and not charged on top of the standard fee. I can get an oil change with new filter for approx. $80 (35 quid) - no other checks. Cheers

Re: BP SERVICE CENTRES
Posted by Steve H on June 27, 2006, 7:39 am, in reply to "Re: BP SERVICE CENTRES" I'm not trying to suggest that this will put you out of business and I'm sure that you will still keep busy with your customers who like the way you treat them, but don't underestimate how well convenience sells. How many of us have ordered things online instead of going to a shop? Who goes to the supermarket each week rather than buying at the bakers, butchers, greengrocers, corner shop etc. Joe public nowadays doesn't expect their car to require much attention and on newish vehicles they may well get away with 30 minute servicing for a number of years without needing anything else apart from tyres and possibly brakes that they can get from the fast-fits. This probably won't put us out of business but if done well it could be sucessful and have plenty of happy customers. Just my opinion! Steve
