"you will not be repairing vehicles or even lifting the bonnet" !! "just providing a diagnostic report for a mechanic to carry out the repair", and what happens if the diagnosis is wrong? Well i will give them 10/10 for hype "You don’t need diagnostics experience"......you can learn it all on a weeks course You will work on all makes.......van load of scanners then!!!! Earn a £1000 a week, is that after paying for the van, equipment,updates, tax, insurance, fuel and the franchise cut All that from as little as 31 jobs a week, what about the other 62 non earners you could not fix because you scanner won't communicate mmmmm... Can you see the Watchdog report in a few years time when someone who has signed on to this finds he is working all hours to pay for the franchise with no way out? The Monthly Management Service Fee It’s set at a reasonable 12½% of income . How Long Does It Take To Get Back My Franchise Fee? Good morning everybody,Sorry for this long thread but i feel compelled to write on this subject. Having taught lets just say quite a few master technicians from 6 different motor manufacturers for over nine years now in not only diagnostics but many other areas how do they think they are going to train somebody in a few days that takes years of experience. The average time taken to train most technicians of this criteria would mormally take three years followed by a six to eight week block for some manufacturers bearing in mind they only work on one brand not unlike the people of this forum who have to cope with anything that drives or is towed in to the workshop of any manufacturer.Ok we might get the odd switched on technician parting with his money and to this effect i would appologise to the few that are in this situationfor the franchise. But really the reason why we havent had a super enquiry from the goverment into the motortrade is because everybodys experience is often based on or tarred with the same brush as the fred in the shed (didnt want to say this but !) Therfore ATA acreditiation came into efect with the Institute of the Motor Industry so people could identify with some body that can prove their ability and work to a standard.What a shame someone is jumping on the bandwagon of diagnostics thinking its a large profit making business what about all the hours spent scratching around only to find something simple i know ive been thier and can you always charge for all the time taken NO! What with ever increasing complexity on vehicles ie CAN LIN MOST Common rail are these going to be trained in a few hours me thinks not so to all the garages keep up the good work in the posts im sure to keep subscribing as i have learnt so much from this forum and the likes of the people who put post on here. Unfortunatley there are techs who although competent think it is easy to run a business. There was on in our local pub who declared I'm ex mitsubishi and I'm starting on my own, I've got it all worked out 5 jobs a day 40 quid each thats a grand a week-- I wish.(hes a bit more subdued these days) We hardly sell a battery or alternator because the accesory shops do free innacurate testing. I can see these new operations bringing calls like "dynacode have been out and say you need an auto electrician" just like some of the air con regas and run people do.And hometune used to do. This will deprive us once again of the bread and butter jobs we need to pay for our equipment and possibly drive down the price of a code read. The only thing we can do is force up the price of proper diagnostic work. Barry  Post a Response ( * ) Required

'Computerised vehicle diagnostics', then they must be using Ranalds latest piece of kit which tells you exactly whats wrong with the vehicle within seconds of plugging in. Looks like someone is trying to invent the wheel all over again!!! I've been there, done that, and seen so many techs and strictly non techs fall at the first or subsequent fence, but believe you me most will fall, or their marraiges will fail or their homes be re-possesed etc etc. This repetitve scenario does nothing but muddy the already murky side of 'entreprenuerial' techs looking for that golden egg....... it ain't GoD'... I joined the Original HOMETUNE back in 1972, and believe me, in those days it DID work..... mind you I'm struggling now...18 yrs with HOMETUNE and 18 years with Hometune's natural successor TUNE-UP, and obviously it must be too late to change now.... and lose the benefits of all that experience. All that GoD' will give us is greater market awareness, so let us all capitalise on their marketing hype and we should continue to provide the trade and the motorist with a proven service.  Post a Response ( * ) Required

Hi Ed I think Tom's post in the General Discussion forum is a fine example. Your avarage tech after a weeks training course pulls up to the Vectra C with his Autodiagnos and plugs it in and is presented with 10 fault codes (CAN related).......so what does he do now?, PANIC probably. It's only Tom's experience and determination that led him to the fix I wonder if the weeks course even touches on CAN systems......it will take a very brave man to sign up to this one Peter  Post a Response ( * ) Required

Hi guys, nice to see a couple of the original HomeTune guys on here. I joined in 1976, covering Central Scotland, I think we were nearly all busy in those days, some of us used to do 100 or 150 cars a month, incredible to think back on that now, we could live nicely just on profit from spares sales, points etc. but it sure is hard nowadays, if I was 10 years younger I certainly would change career, property developing probably, Jim Watson.  Post a Response ( * ) Required
